Author: Jürgen Franzke
Published by: transpress
On 2 June 1957 began the introduction of the Trans-Europ-Express, a new epoche of European railway transport. Its dedicated new railcars created a new benchmark for comfort on rails. The elegant red-beige exteriors of the luxury trains produced an enormous popularity of the first class offerings, which quickly became a symbol for a borderless Europe and connecting the west European metropoli with each other, long before politics switched to a community of states without border formalities.
Dr Jürgen Franzke, Director of the Nürnberg DB Museum presents with over 150 impressive, mostly colour, pictures from well-known railway photographers a vivid portrayal of the former TEE Mythos which ended with a last voyage on 26 May 1995. On 152 pages the authors describe extensively the development of the TEE traffic and illuminate the technical histories of the individual railcars plus the careers of the in total 60 train pairs. Paperback
Author: David Laurence Jones
Published by: Fitzhenry & Whiteside Limited
Have you ever wondered, while sitting in traffic or waiting to board a crowded airplane, what it was like to travel the rails?

In his new book, "Famous Name Trains: Travelling in Style with the CPR," former CPR archivist David Laurence Jones goes back in time to describe what it was like to travel on some of the CPR's famous "name trains," like the "Pacific Express," the "Imperial Limited," and the "Canadian," Jones evokes both the practical interiors of the early colonist cars with their communal sleeping arrangements and wooden bench seats, and the luxury of the higher-end cars that looked and felt like rolling men's clubs with wooden veneers, plush carpets, and upholstered chairs. These first-class cars would later become five-star hotels on wheels. Jones tracks the evolution of the passenger train, detailing improvements in engine strength, heating, lighting, interior design, and innovative sleeping arrangements. Although the ... more

Farewell Santa Fe Steam, Santa Fe Chief, Pacific Electric order quantity

Published by: transpress
The first part of this program covers the last service run by a Santa Fe steam locomotive - a 4-8-4 type, No. 3759 - on 6 February 1955. The film covers the trip from Los Angeles Union Station to Barstow via Cajon Pass. The highlights of the impressive scenes are without doubt the steam train in action amid the snow-covered mountains of Cajon.

The prestigious Santa Fe Chief is passed in the previous film; now it becomes the subject of a 10 minute film in its own right. This looks at the departure of the train from Los Angeles in the early 1960s.

On 9 April 1961 the era of the Pacific Electric came to an end. The big red cars of "The World's Greatest Interurban" once criss-crossed southern California on over 1,000 miles of track. By the beginning of 1961 this had been reduced to just the 20-mile LA to Long Beach section. This was the first line of the Pacific Electric, opened in 1902 and in 1961 it was the last. Just before ... more

Railway building in East Africa started at the end of the 19th century. The colonial powers Britain and Germany had divided the land between them, but without transport links to the interior it was worthless. Construction of the German railway, the Usambarabahn, started first, but the British was in 1901 the first to reach Lake Victoria. This was the so-named Uganda Railway although it was entirely in Kenya.

The Uganda Railway had been built to metre rather than Cape gauge (1067 mm) as an economy measure, which limited capacity but was an advantage when Tanganyika came under British rule after the First World War and the railways were linked up. The longer Central line in Tanganyika, now Tanzania, was not connected by rail until 1963.

Motive power on the UR was initially light engines from India. More powerful locomotives were required for the growing traffic on demanding grades. Mallet locomotives first appeared in 1912, but ... more

Published by: Camden Miniature Steam Services
A lavish big book of colour steam railway scenes taken in various countries in the 1950s and 1960s. John Snell, with Tom Rolt and David Curwen when they opened the doors of Pendre Shed at Towyn in April 1951, started the worldwide preservation movement. He retired in 1999 after 28 years as General Manager of the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway. Between times he has always been actively involved with railways on many fronts, including writing or contributing to numerous books on railways. John has travelled widely, always with camera to hand. What is surprising is that very few examples of his photography have ever been published before and, as is very evident here, he is fully the equal of the well known photographers from the 1950s on - Derek Cross, W. V. Anderson, Eric Treacy, Marc Dahlstom, Felix Fenino et al., although he was perhaps a more enthusiastic, and earlier, user of colour than most.
